The Donaghadee Community Development Association will once again be co-ordinating the summer festival in Donaghadee. In a change from tradition, this year’s festival will run from 22 June right through to September with events concentrated on weekends though there will be some events taking place on weekdays as well.

The Association is encouraging all businesses and organisations within the town to organise an event for inclusion in the festival programme. Several new events are in the pipeline including a soap box derby. Gary McNinch, Chairman of the Association said “We are keen to see a wide range of events and as many organisations and businesses involved as possible. This is an opportunity to not only celebrate community life in Donaghadee but also to raise the profile of the town and its diverse range of organisations. Sporting clubs might consider a coaching event for young people or an event reflecting their particular interest, pubs and clubs could consider musical entertainment and individual businesses might want to run a competition for younger children”.

Those wishing to organise an event should submit proposals to or leave details in an envelope marked “Festival 2019” in Dunn’s Footwear, Pier 36 or County Hardware.

The annual cost of the Festival has now risen to around £20,000. Referring to the costs Mr McNinch said, “We are very grateful for the financial support we receive from Ards and North Down Borough Council but we are heavily dependent on local businesses for financial support through sponsorship and advertising in the programme. Sponsors of events have an ideal opportunity to not only promote their business but also demonstrate their commitment to the local community. We shall be contacting local businesses over the next few months and trust that they will be as generous with their support as has been the case in the past”.
