For the fifth consecutive year, sixth form pupils from Killard Special School are making Donaghadee bloom – one window box at a time.

As part of a much-loved annual tradition, the pupils have planted over 100 vibrant window boxes, which will be distributed to homes and businesses throughout the town centre. The project, coordinated by the Donaghadee Community Development Association (DCDA), continues to receive praise from both local residents and Ulster in Bloom judges alike.

DCDA provides the window boxes and plants, while compost is generously supplied by Ards and North Down Borough Council.  Committee member Liz McWatters, alongside teacher Rebecca Lowry, guided the pupils through the planting process.

“We’ve built a great relationship with the school over the years,” said Liz McWatters. “The pupils show such care and enthusiasm, and they should be very proud of their contribution. These colourful displays really brighten the town and reflect the strength of our community spirit.”

Each window box carries a personalised label proudly bearing the name of the pupil who planted it: “This window box was planted by…” — a small touch that means a lot.

School principal Katrina Yeates praised the educational value of the project. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to engage with the wider community while developing hands-on skills in horticulture, teamwork and responsibility. It’s practical learning at its best.”

One proud pupil shared their excitement:-

Jude Langga said, “It was really fun planting the window boxes – I got to work with my friends and learn how to arrange the plants properly. I feel proud knowing that something I helped make will brighten up the town. I can’t wait to spot the one with my name on it!”

The Killard window box project continues to grow in impact and popularity – a blooming success in every sense.
