Donaghadee Projects

About Donaghadee’s Community Projects

At the heart of Donaghadee is an active volunteer network working year-round to make the town a better place to live, work and visit. The Donaghadee Community Development Association (DCDA), established in 2011, connects residents, schools, traders and local organisations to deliver events, environmental projects and community initiatives that strengthen civic pride and wellbeing.

With one of the fastest-growing populations in Northern Ireland and a large number of single-occupancy households, our work focuses strongly on inclusion, reducing loneliness and creating opportunities for people of all ages to participate in community life.

Festivals & Events

Donaghadee’s annual programme of events brings the town to life from spring through Christmas. Over 100 events now take place each year, attracting tens of thousands of visitors while supporting local businesses and showcasing community talent.

Highlights include:

  • Summer Festival events along the harbour and shorefront
  • Sunday band concerts
  • Family fun days and children’s activities
  • St Patrick’s celebrations
  • Christmas arrival of Santa by lifeboat and festive market
  • Community carol service and lights switch-on

These events are organised entirely by volunteers and local organisations, creating a strong sense of shared ownership and pride.

Creative & Cultural Life

Creative Donaghadee supports arts, music, drama and poetry in the town, helping local artists and performers bring culture into public spaces. Events are integrated into festivals and seasonal celebrations, ensuring arts and creativity are accessible to everyone.

This growing programme strengthens Donaghadee’s cultural identity while encouraging participation across generations.

Donaghadee in Bloom and Environmental Projects

Donaghadee’s award-winning environmental work is driven by over 150 volunteers who maintain floral displays, community gardens and natural spaces.

Key projects include:

  • Hanging baskets and shorefront planters
  • Killard School window box project involving special-needs pupils
  • Upcycled planting displays promoting sustainability
  • Restoration of Crommelin Wood woodland
  • Community orchard at Hunt’s Park
  • Marine litter education project with local schools
  • Community vegetable garden initiatives

These projects have helped Donaghadee win multiple national and international awards, including Britain in Bloom recognition, while encouraging environmental awareness and hands-on volunteering.

Supporting Community Life

The association works to strengthen the town’s social fabric by:

  • Helping new groups form and become independent
  • Supporting existing clubs and organisations
  • Providing equipment and grant guidance
  • Sharing weekly community information updates
  • Encouraging volunteering and skills development

Projects are designed not only to deliver events but to build long-term leadership and sustainability within the community.

Strengthening the Local Economy

Community events and town promotion help generate footfall and support local traders. Initiatives include:

  • Shop local campaigns
  • Town branding and promotional materials
  • Support for trader development
  • Collaboration with council regeneration projects
  • Advocacy for parking, transport and infrastructure improvements

A vibrant town centre benefits both residents and visitors, helping Donaghadee remain an attractive coastal destination.

A Town That Works Together

Donaghadee’s success comes from collaboration — volunteers, schools, businesses and public bodies working in partnership. Projects respond directly to local needs, from youth engagement and wellbeing initiatives to environmental sustainability and cultural development.

The goal is simple: a welcoming, inclusive town where community spirit thrives.
